REPHRASING: MODALS

Here's a list of the modal verbs in english:

CAN

COULD

MAY

MIGHT

SHOULD

OUGHT TO

HAD BETTER

HAVE TO

WOULD LIKE

Modals are different from normal verbs:

* They don't use an 's' for the third person singular.
* They make questions by inversion ('she can go' becomes 'can she go?')
* They are followed directly by the infinitive of another verb (without 'to')


Can --> To show ability 
        -->To suggest a possibility or give and option.
        -->To ask for or to give permission.
        -->To show impossibility 

Could -->To show past ability 
           -->To ask a polite question.
           -->To show possibility.
           -->To suggest a possibility/opportunity or give an option.
May -->To ask for or to give permission (formal)
        -->To show possibility.

Might -->To show possibility.

Should-->To show advisability.
           -->To show obligation.
           -->To show expectation.

Ought to-->To show advisability.
              -->To show obligation.
              -->To show expectation.

Had better -->To show advisability.

Must -->To show probability or to make a logical assumption.
         -->To show necessity.
         -->To show prohibition.

Have to -->To show necessity.
              -->To show lack of necessity.

Will -->To indicate future time.
       -->To make a promises or to show willingness.
       -->To state a general truth.
       -->To ask a polite question.

Would -->To ask a polite question.
           -->To indicate a repeated action in the past.
           -->To indicate future time in the sentence that is in the past.
           
Would rather-->To show a preference.

Would like-->To express a desire.
